Soldbuch first issue to Oberfeldwebel Schafer.
The Soldbuch opens at 28 August 1939 with 6./Infantrie Regiment 167.
After his basic training he became part of IR 167 of the 86. Infanterie Division.
With this Division he he fought in 1940 on the Westfront in France.
In 1941 he was part of 6./Infanterie Regiment 529 of the 299. Infanterie Division wich fought in Russia as part of Heeresgruppe Sud.
In 1944 he was part of Divisions Fuselier Batallion 1059 of the 159. Infanterie Division wich fought in the Elsas against French and American troops during Operation Nordwind.
Most of the Division got trapped in the Colmar pocket but he managed to escape.
Remnants of the Division fought in March - April 1945 around Reichendbach, Odenwald. During these last battles he must have shown bravery on the battlefield and was awarded the EK 2 on 17 April 1945.
He was taken POW somewhere in April - May 1945.
