The II Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 1 was based in Rheine close to the Dutch - German border from 13-7-1943 untill 18-3-1944 and flew defense missions on the Westfront above the Netherlands and north-Germany.
On 31-5-1944 he died during an air battle in Österwiehe, North-east of Osnabrück, Germany.
