Citation EK 2 – 180. Infanterie Division Venraij 1944

Citation for the EK 2 to Wilhelm Horstmann.

He was a member of the 3. Kompanie of Grenadier ersatz Battalion 65 wich would later become the I. Battalion of Grenadier Regiment 1222 of the 180. Infanterie Division.

The document is signed by the Divisional commander Generalmajor Bernhard Klosterkemper. (Knightscross 4-7-1944 for actions in Normandy)

The Grenadier ersatz Battalion 65 was send to the Netherlands after the Allies had launched operation Market Garden and was send towards Deurne and Asten.

After the failed Germans attempts to break through the Allied Corridor the Kampfgruppe Walther had to withdrawal towards the area of Overloon.

After the battles at Overloon the Allies pushed towards Venraij.

Most probarly for bravery shown during the battles on 16 and 17 October around Merselo and Haag / Loobeek he was awarded the EK 2.
