On 20 April 1944 he was awarded the Kriegsverdienstenkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwerten, signed by Generalleutnant and Divisional commander Kurt Chill.
Chill would be responsible against all orders to gather all kinds of retreating troops in northern Belgium and stop the Allied advance.
His battlegroup in Belgium and Holland would became known as Kampfgruppe Chill wich featerures Fallschirmjager, Infanterie and Armoured units.
On 18 August Pionier Gottfried Egger got wounded for the first time in Normandy north of the Falaise pocket and was brought to an hospital in Ludenscheid, Germany.
On 4 September 1944 he was awarded the Wounded badge in Black.
