The document is signed on 16 May 1940 by Generalmajor und Kommandeur Ernst Hammer of the 75. Infanterie Division. (Knightscross 20-11-1941)

In September 1944 Ernst Hammer was the commander of the 190. Infanterie Division wich operated east of Nijmegen against the 82. Airborne Division during and after Operation Market Garden.
