In 1939 he was active in Poland.

In May 1940 his Division took part in conquering of the Belgium Forts around Liege /  Luttich / Luik.

From 1941 untill 1944 he served in Russia as part of Heeresgruppe Nord around Leningrad, Oranienbaum and Lake Ladoga.

In 1944 he became part of the 275. Infanterie Division wich was stationed in Bretagne, France.

After the Allied landings on June 6 elements of the Division were sent to Normandy as part of Kampfgruppe Heintz wich fought West of St. Lo, Normandy.
